How to Apply for Financial Aid The financial aid application process begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To file the FAFSA, you must apply online at www. fafsa. gov. It is recommended that you apply for financial aid no later than April 1 for the next academic year in order to receive full consideration for all financial aid. If you are a new or returning student, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Who We Are. . . Financial aid is money that can be used to help bridge the gap between your own resources and the amount of money needed to pay the cost of attending college. Approximately 70 percent of CSU's students receive some form of financial assistance. The University participates in or administers all of the major federal and state grant and loan programs. In addition, CSU provides University grants and scholarships. Applying for federal Financial Aid can be, at times, challenging. The Federal Government in recent years, in an effort to utilize 21st century technology and reduce the amount of paperwork required, has created an easier and faster way for families to provide tax information when completing the application for financial aid.
Understanding and applying for financial aid can be overwhelming. Not long ago, Congress required a school to conduct more than 50 percent of its teaching in a classroom setting in order to qualify as federal financial aid distributors. This tactic prevented so-called “diploma mills” from qualifying for federal aid, yet negatively impacted many students who were pursuing a degree through legitimate online programs. Many of these students were working adults, rural residents or military personnel who benefited from the flexibility of distance learning, but needed help paying for a college education. In February 2006, the requirement was lifted, making federal aid available to eligible students who wanted to attend an online college.

But it’s an unfortunate reality that sometimes it takes a serious wake-up call to realize you need to turn your life around and make something better for yourself. In many cases, that means education. But, having a conviction on your record can make getting an education a little more complicated. Your eligibility for federal aid can be affected by a criminal record, although that depends on the type of conviction you have. Are you incarcerated? If yes, then you will have limited eligibility for the federal student aid program.
