Calculating Potential Energy Savings of Vinyl Roofing Membranes
How can you get a quantitative analysis of the potential energy savings for your building without performing a detailed building energy simulation?
Roofing calculators and other tools are available to help architects, specifiers, roofing contractors, building owners or facility managers evaluate the energy efficiency of roofing systems under consideration.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Cool Roof Calculator
This energy savings calculator, developed by DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, estimates cooling and heating savings for low slope roof applications with non-black surfaces. This calculator (2.0) is for large facilities that purchase electricity with a demand charge based on peak monthly load. Embedded within that calculator is another link (1.2) for small or medium-sized facilities that purchase electricity without a demand charge. A newer calculator is in development to replace this one and the beta calculator at http://rsc.ornl.gov/.
ROOFPOINT™ GUIDELINE FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY INNOVATIVE NONRESIDENTIAL ROOFING
The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (CEIR), which is dedicated to promoting the development and use of environmentally responsible, energy efficient, high performance roof systems, offers RoofPoint™, the first green building rating system designed to address the energy savings and environmental benefits of the more than 3 billion square feet of commercial roofs installed on new and existing buildings each year in the U.S. The
RoofPoint Guideline for Environmentally Innovative Nonresidential Roofing[899 KB]offers roofing contractors, designers and building owners a means to select roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits. The cool roof aspect of the evaluation breaks down the cool roofing credit into three sub-credits: net energy savings, peak energy demand reduction, and heat island mitigation.
CEIR recently introduced the RoofPoint Energy and Carbon Calculator, an extension of the rating system intended to provide a comprehensive modeling tool to measure both energy savings and atmospheric carbon reduction. If you are interested in participating in the initial public testing of the roofing calculator, download a free beta version[210 KB]and contact Jim Kirby for additional details.
Vinyl roof surfaces, also known as PVC membrane roofing, can improve the energy efficiency of buildings while positively impacting the quality of the urban environment.
